Our Mission & Philosophy

The Hospice of Acadiana, Inc. Mission is four-fold:

  • To enable persons with life-threatening conditions to live as fully and comfortably as possible.
  • To emphasize quality rather than length of life.
  • To help people deal with grief.
  • To become an educational resource in the areas of death, dying, terminal care, and related fields.
The Hospice Philosophy of Patient Care:
  • Hospice care is home-based. We affirm the right of each person to spend one's final months or weeks in peace and comfort and to die with dignity at home.

  • Hospice care is family-centered. The entire family, not just the patient, is considered the "unit of care." Patients and their families are included in the decision-making process, and bereavement counseling is offered to the family after the death of their loved one.

  • Hospice stresses palliative care, as opposed to curative care. Under the direction of a team of physicians, we use sophisticated methods of pain control and symptom management that enable the patient to live as fully and comfortably as possible.

  • Hospice emphasizes a holistic approach and treats the person, not just the disease. The interdisciplinary hospice team addresses the medical, emotional, psychological, social, financial, and spiritual needs of the patient.

  • Hospice also emphasizes quality rather than length of life. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. It does, however, affirm life and regards death as a normal process. Our goal is to enhance the patient's quality of life in his or her final months, weeks, and days.
